Buster Keaton: A Restrospective

Dec. 15 - Dec. 16, 2012

The ambition of the Lightcube Retrospective is to conduct a journey, a lengthy voyage through the filmography of an important, as opposed to 'great', director and ensure a brief overview and introduction to his work through the exhibition of a number of his films. The showing of the films will also be accompanied by discussions, video-essays, exhibitions and printed-material on the work of the director or idea in question.

Sherlock Jr. / Buster Keaton / 1924 / 6PM

In Sherlock Jr., we have an unnamed, small-time projectionist, who projects, who invents an identity for himself; an identity he escapes into; an identity that can, perhaps, be only appropriated in ‘the Movies’. Now, what happens next is the stuff of Cinematic legend. A sequence that converges ‘dreams’ and ‘reality’ ensues, which, one may argue, extends to the ‘end’ of this particular film. But has the film really ended? Has the projectionist with his ‘escape’, not taken with itself, a part of the essence of our soul? Is his journey, his dream, not that of our own? Is the film, ’real’, and have we, in its captive gaze, been pushed further, into the dream that people call human life? The great Raul Ruiz, talked about a film that watches us as we watch it, reflecting-he calls it a ‘turbulent mirror’-our own anxieties, our hopes, our realities. -Rahee Punyashloka
